Botox® for Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Sweating is natural and critical to thermoregulation. It feels good during a solid workout, but not so much when you’re sitting at your desk, out for dinner, or really anywhere else. The good news is excessive sweating is entirely treatable with the help of Botox®.

Fast Facts

Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Botox® has the ability to temporarily block the secretion of the chemical responsible for stimulating the body’s sweat glands. By interrupting this chemical messenger, botulinum toxin inhibits sweating in the area where it has been injected. While hyperhidrosis may not be serious, it can affect every area of your life and lead to embarrassment and anxiety. Botox® has been shown to result in an 82-87% decrease in sweating in treated areas. Common areas for Botox® injections for excessive sweating include the underarms and palms of the hands.

BEFORE TREATMENT

  • Do not consume alcohol 24 hours prior.

DURING TREATMENT

  • The amount of units will vary based on the area. Typically, 50 units of Botox® will be injected into each underarm.
  • A fine needle is used to inject Botox® in a grid pattern throughout the area of excessive sweating.

AFTER TREATMENT

  • Do not manipulate the injected area and avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

RESULT NOTES

  • Full results are noticeable within 2 weeks.
  • Maintenance treatments are needed every 6-12 months.
How does Botox® treat excessive sweating?

Hyperhidrosis is defined as severe or excessive sweating that normally occurs in the armpits or on the palms. Botox® works by blocking nerve impulses that stimulate eccrine gland production, preventing these glands from producing sweat.

What is the typical recovery time?

You will be able to resume normal activity immediately after receiving Botox® injections. However, vigorous rubbing of the area should be avoided for at least 48 hours after treatment. You should also avoid exercise for 24 hours after treatment.

When will I see results?

Effects of Botox® for excessive sweating are usually noticeable within the first week following treatment, with full results appearing within two weeks.

How long do results last?

For most people, the results of Botox® can last 6 to 12 months, dramatically reducing or stopping sweating in the treatment area. You will need to have the treatment repeated as the effects wear off and normal function returns to the nerves.
