AESTHETICS, FILLER

Nervous (but excited) about getting lip filler for the time? You’re not alone! Here’s what you need to know. From how much it hurts to how long it lasts, we speak to Dr. Kashouty about what to expect before, during, and after getting lip filler.

HOW DO LIP FILLERS WORK?

As we age, the face begins to lose volume and definition, including the lips. Powered by a soft, gel-like form of hyaluronic acid—the star ingredient in many moisturizers and a naturally occurring substance in our skin—lip fillers give shape and fullness back to the lips.

ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LIP FILLER?

At Neurostrive, we only use hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers which naturally degrade and are absorbed by the body over time. I like using the Juvéderm® and RHA® suite of hyaluronic acid filler, both of which are approved by the FDA. Hyaluronic acid naturally exists in the skin and is a key component in the skin’s ability to retain water for a plump, hydrated complexion. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be reversed at any point in time with hyaluronidase, a family of enzymes that catalyze the degradation of hyaluronic acid.

ARE THERE PARTS OF THE LIP THAT I SHOULDN’T GET INJECTED?

The lips are one of the most delicate areas to inject. The architecture of the lips is incredibly intricate, plus there are layers of blood vessels, muscles, and fat to consider. Add to that the fact that you’re injecting an area with a ton of dynamic movement and you can imagine how complex this treatment is. An experienced injector will keep all this in mind while also working with a client’s existing anatomy to get them the results they’re looking for. It really is a true expert’s work and should only be performed by highly experienced injectors.

I’ve seen several patients with undesirable results from lip filler done by inexperienced injectors elsewhere. My colleagues and I are dissolving more lips gone wrong than ever before. I cannot stress enough how important it is to go to a board-certified and experienced injector.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Unlike Botox where you have to wait about a week to see results, the effect of lip filler is immediate. With that said, there is a brief recovery period (about a week) where the lips swell and settle. During this period, they will look slightly bigger than the final result.

Lip filler results last 6-12 months depending on the filler used and the patient’s lifestyle. During the touch up session, I will assess the amount of filler still remaining in the lips, if any, and adjust accordingly.

CAN I KISS AFTER LIP FILLER?

While the procedure is non-invasive, patients can expect to experience some swelling, bruising and sensitivity during the first few days following treatment. While a quick and light peck might be fine, anything more intense can make the unpleasant side effects last longer. To help protect your new look and keep you comfortable, I recommend taking it easy on the romance for at least 72 hours following your injection or longer if you’re continuing to experience swelling and bruising.

IF I CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT LIP FILLERS, CAN I GET THEM DISSOLVED?

Yes. If the type of lip filler used is made from hyaluronic acid, which is the only type we use at Neurostrive, it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase. The process of having hyaluronidase injected is similar to the initial lip injections—with a tiny needle in certain areas of the lip. The lips will return to their original state pre-filler in a few days.
