Microneedling with PRP

Collagen plays a critical role in keeping skin healthy, youthful-looking, and strong. Although its levels in the skin drop over time, what goes down can come up again with the help of microneedling. A powerful synergy is created when we add PRP, which is filled with growth factors to supercharge results.

What is Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling is a non-invasive skin treatment that helps improve the texture and appearance of the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production. Our microneedling treatment uses an electric medical-grade pen that houses 12 fine, sterile needles which create microchannels that reach safely and effectively to the deep dermal layers of the skin.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a naturally rejuvenating procedure used for stimulation of tissue healing, collagen production, and reduced inflammation. The treatment involves drawing blood from the patient and centrifuging it at a very high speed to separate out red blood cells, leaving behind concentrated plasma. The injection of this plasma rich in platelets and growth factors into the skin has been shown to reduce wrinkles and lines, help even out skin tone, improve scarring, and lighten sun spots.

When microneedling is combined with PRP, the PRP follows the microchannels created by the microneedling, soaking deep into the dermis. The PRP gets to work right away to promote cell growth and speed up the rate and quality of your renewal.

What is the advantage of combining Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling with PRP is the recommended method of administering PRP to the skin. Microneedling is performed using an electric medical-grade pen. The pen houses 12 fine needles which create fine microchannels in the skin. These channels reach safely and effectively to the deep dermal layers.

Once microneedling has been performed, the PRP is applied to your skin. The PRP follows the microchannels created by the microneedling and soaks into the deep dermis. The PRP promotes cell growth and speeds up the rate and quality of your renewal. Adding PRP to microneedling results in a more dramatic improvement in skin volume and clarity.

How does Microneedling with PRP improve my skin?

Microneedling with PRP application stimulates the healthy function of your skin. The microchannels create “mini wounds” in the skin, promoting the renewal of damaged, scarred skin. The growth factors in the platelet proteins engage with the deep dermis on a cellular level, promoting better renewal and producing a greater amount of collagen growth than microneedling alone. The growth factors also improve the speed of cell turnover, making the skin fuller and filling in fine lines and wrinkles.

Can Microneedling with PRP treat scarring?

The PRP facilitates new skin cell production that slowly replaces damaged, scarred skin. Skin becomes smoother and more even-toned. Subsequent PRP applications will continue to improve the appearance of acne scars and discolorations until the skin is smooth and clear. Most patients see their best results within three treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart.

How many sessions are needed?

Patients see their best skin after three PRP applications. We recommend spacing each session at least four to six weeks apart. To keep skin glowing and looking its best, we recommend repeating one PRP application every six months.

Who is the ideal candidate for Microneedling with PRP?

Microneedling with PRP is ideal for someone who wishes to improve the appearance of skin imperfections such as fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity, scarring, and uneven skin tone and texture.

Who is Microneedling with PRP not recommended for?

Microneedling with PRP is not recommended for those who have used Accutane within six months, have open wounds or a skin infection, have had radiation treatment within the last year, are pregnant, or have a history of keloid scars.

Is there anything important to know during the recovery process?

For at least 3 days post-treatment, do not use any alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acid, retinol products, or vitamin C-based skincare. Avoid direct sun exposure for 1 week. Do not go swimming or wash your face for 24 hours after your microneedling with PRP procedure. Avoid exercising and strenuous activity for the first 24 hours following treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Microneedling with PRP is generally well tolerated, but redness may be seen after treatment, lasting for 2-3 days. Skin may also feel warm, tight, and itchy after treatment; however, this normally resolves in 12-48 hours. Sun protection is advised for a week, and local antibiotic creams may be prescribed to help prevent a bacterial infection. PRP itself has no negative effects since it is a natural product created from your own body.
